Truncation is a type of abbreviation that consists only of the first part of a word. It is most often used when referring to suitable titles, such as months of the year or days of the week. Truncation involves cutting a part of something parallel to its base (or perpendicular to its side). It can also mean the state of being truncated, which is the act or process of shortening something by removing part of it.
In scientific and medical contexts, truncation is very useful when you know that one of your search terms has multiple endings, but all variations represent basically the same idea. In banking, truncation is used in a more specific way to refer to a simplified electronic check registration system in which the bank does not return canceled checks to customers. Truncations omit the end of a word (and sometimes other letters as well), while contractions omit the middle letters. Truncation may involve the removal of the beginning of something, its end, its top or other part. As an adjective, truncate is used in a more specialized way in biology, in which it is used to describe a part of an organism, such as the leaf of a plant, that looks like it has been cut off at the tip.
The plural of a truncated word is still considered a truncation, and therefore still has a period. The first use of truncating is as an adjective that describes something (like a leaf or a feather) with the square end as if it had been cut off.
