What is Truncation in Communication?

Truncation is an important concept in communication which involves cutting off points or shortening terms by adding symbols such as asterisks to word roots. Learn more about how it works here.

What is Truncation in Communication?

Truncation is a process of cutting off a point or shortening a term by adding a symbol, such as an asterisk, to the root of a word. This allows computers to find the root plus anything that comes after it. Truncation is commonly used with keywords to keep the root and remove everything else. Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is an engineering branch that has enabled unprecedented levels of communication and entertainment in just a few decades.

By combining the principles of electronics, telecommunications and computing, DSP has been at the heart of the digital revolution that brought us CDs, DVDs, MP3 players, mobile phones and many other devices. This course will teach students the fundamentals of DSP from scratch. Starting from the basic definition of a discrete time signal, we will work our way through Fourier analysis, filter design, sampling, interpolation and quantization to build a comprehensive DSP toolset that can analyze a communication system in detail. Practical examples and demonstrations will be used to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

To get the most out of this class, it is recommended that students have a good understanding of basic calculus and linear algebra; several programming examples will be provided in Python notebooks, but students can use their preferred language to test the algorithms described in the course. When is it appropriate to use abbreviated versions of words? The type of publication and context of the content determine whether truncated words are suitable. It is common to truncate potentials for computational efficiency based on the assumption that errors are negligible for reasonable cuts or can be compensated for by adjusting other interaction parameters. Using shorter truncated sentences gives people more time to pause and think about what is being said, creating a greater impact.

As a rule, short truncated sentences work well at the beginning of a paragraph or element of speech to draw attention. Truncated sentences are also frequently used in everyday speech, although they can cause confusion when used incorrectly. One place where truncated words are widely accepted is newspaper headlines, particularly in tabloids, even if the story is a news article. It's important to consider sentence structure: short, simple sentences or truncated sentences can create tension, haste or urgency, while longer compound or complex sentences are slower and often appear in formal texts.

Truncated sentences are often referred to as short sentences, but there is a difference between short sentences and truncated sentences. The example above shows us that truncated sentences can be used to make communication more informal and conversational. When something is cut off, it is truncated and many things can be truncated, including sentences. Instead of searching for each word separately, you can search for them all at once using truncation. I strongly believe that casualisms and truncated nouns not yet lexicalized should be avoided by careful writers; however, in novels and short stories where it is direct speech, it would be acceptable as otherwise the characters' speech may sound forced or unnatural.

If abbreviations or truncated words are used in formal or informal writing, they should have been introduced earlier in the article so that readers can easily identify with them through writing. You must add a wildcard to the root of the word so that databases recognize that you are using truncation. Such a qualitative difference requires caution and suggests that unbound truncated potentials may induce antiphysical behavior that cannot be fully explained by adjusting other interaction parameters. A good way to understand the effects of a truncated sentence is to extend it by adding the missing words and comparing the extended version with the truncated one.
